Twins who are born 1 minute apart always have to undergo comparison and competition. Sometimes it is one's own will; other times, it is the will of others. There are two big stars that have grown under the arms of JYP: 2AM and 2PM. Together, people call them One Day.
The two teams definitely have different feels. 2AM is a vocal group with rich sensitivity and that brags of its strong vocal abilities, while 2PM is a dance group with gorgeous performances and impressive stage costumes. Though they are certainly different groups, they are like twins that cannot avoid good-natured competition.
◆ 1 month difference in debuts, 1 year difference in 1st place wins
2AM debuted on July 11, 2008, one month quicker than 2PM to stand on stage. Unlike 2PM, whose strong performances earned them the nickname 'beast idols' and who definitively made their existence known, 2AM could not do the same. The public's reaction to 2AM was late.
Reflecting this, 2PM achieved their first 1st place win on May 7, 2009 with 'Again & Again,' less than one year after their debut. On the other hand, 2AM achieved their first 1st place win in February 2010 with 'I Can't Let You Go If I Die' on SBS 'Inkigayo,' more than 1 year after their debut. The 2AM members, who had suffered as the public reacted more dully to them than to 2PM, spent their moment at 1st place crying tears.
◆ The great showdown of Wed-Thurs dramas, at the heart of which are Seulong vs. Taecyeon
Their competition continues in acting, as well. 2AM's Seulong and 2PM's Taecyeon are playing individual characters in MBC's 'Personal Taste' and KBS 2TV's 'Cinderella's Sister,' respectfully. Taecyeon's natural Pusan dialect is especially skillful, flawlessly taking on the role of 'simple honest man' Jungwoo, who loves only one girl.
Their Wed-Thurs dramas are compared on many points and elements, including the fact that neither of them have any acting experience, their tall heights, and that their faces have both been slapped by actors. Though the dramas in which they're acting have not yet finished, Taecyeon is winning against Seulong in terms of viewer ratings and viewer reviews. However, viewers' eyes are happy to have seen Seulong's potential as an actor.
◆ Kkap Kwon, Jjing jjing Wooyoung, Pocket Man, Ok Cat... 'Entertainment idols' 2AM-2PM have dozens of nicknames alone
2AM and 2PM's superiority in entertainment programs cannot be denied. Their activities, ranging from MC-ing to real variety shows, do not end. The most compelling 2AM member in entertainment programs is Jo Kwon. Whether he films MBC's 'We Got Married' or 'Sebakwi,' he always carries around the image of a cute 'Pocket Man,' as well as 'Kkap Kwon,' who can start dancing and singing anytime and anywhere, and who is receiving a lot of love. Moreover, 2AM's Jinwoon is currently active in SBS 'As The Flag Waves,' which will be broadcast soon, as well as 'We Got Married.' Changmin was once part of the regular, fixed cast of KBS 2TV 'Star Golden Bell.' 2PM's Taecyeon is on SBS 'Family Outing' with Jo Kwon. Hence they are promoting in a way that befits their reputations as 'entertainment idols.'
◆ The peak of the 2AM VS 2PM competition... Cola-Beer CF
The peak of 2AM and 2PM's competition is in the realm of CFs. 2PM has shot 10 CFs, including makeup, clothes, resorts, and carbonated drinks. They were chosen as the #1 preferred model [by the public], and are therefore currently receiving top model treatment from advertisement agencies. 2AM is impossible to ignore, as well. They have shot clothes, beverages, and other CFs and have made themselves known, raising their price to 1 billion won [T/N: ~1 million USD].
The places the two teams have directly competed in the CF word are 'Cola' and 'Beer.' Companies that advertise these two products are very sensitive to competition, and therefore to the kinds of models the use. Given this, what is the reason that each of their companies chose to use them this way. One marketing representative said, "If you see 2AM or 2PM separately, you're immediately reminded of the other. This is why it is possible to have a synergistic effect on the products," he said.
This representative said, "For example, just as 2AM's Pepsi-Cola advertisement campaign simultaneously reminds one of 2PM's Coca Cola advertisement, a sponsor or advertiser may earn an extra effect from the simultaneous modeling of both teams.
◆ 'Best body' [Body jjang] competition
2PM, chosen as 'beast idols' for their masculinity, have great bodies, which is a truth that was well-known even from their beginning debut. But during that time, 2AM, which had spent their time quietly singing ballad songs, made their bodies. 2AM's member Changmin started at 104kg before his debut, before losing 30kg and making his body strong.
